First Day of College
A Teachable Moment
Had my first tutoring session with School on Wheels today. Austin (not his name) is in third grade. Bright kid. Kind. Minecraft-phile. He and mom are living at a house on Inglewood Boulevard for homeless, recovering mothers.
Today’s homework included rhymes and rounding-up; he struggled with the former. Identifying a teachable moment (our first!) I paused, and softened.
“Aw, man, rhymin’s just rappin!” I explained, hands motioning street-like as they had never before. (I was trying to connect.) “That’s all rappin’ is, bro!”
“Oh,” Austin said, apologetically. “I pretty much only listen to classical music.”
It’s gonna be a great year, kid.
Mormon Mental Health Association
Mormons feeling wounded by the new provision banning children of same sex couples from joining the LDS church can seek support via the Mormon Mental Health Association, which provides a list of therapists across the U.S. where Mormons can seek treatment.
